Effects of Acequias on Riparian Vegetation, Evapotranspiration, and Restoration

Acequia-irrigated valleys have been shown to recharge the shallow aquifer along the Rio Grande in northern New Mexico. The increase in shallow groundwater from field and acequia deep percolation may supply additional water to the river during dryer months and could have beneficial implications for the sustainability and restoration of riparian areas. The scope of this study is to characterize how seepage and deep percolation from Acequias can support riparian vegetation and to quantify how much of that water is consumed by riparian vegetation.
